Swimming, diving or jumping into the water with whales is strictly prohibited on our tours. Whale watching in Sri Lanka is regulated by the Department of Wildlife Conservation, and responsible operators keep a respectful distance from the animals at all times. You will watch whales and dolphins from the boat — and then enjoy your swim safely at Pigeon Island reef.
Why this rule protects you: blue whales are the largest animals on Earth — up to 25 metres and 150 tonnes — moving in deep, open water with currents and boat traffic. Entering that water is genuinely dangerous for swimmers.
Why it protects the whales: these are wild animals on their feeding and migration routes. Swimmers and chasing boats cause stress, change their natural behaviour, separate mothers from calves and can drive whales away from the coast — hurting the very thing everyone comes to see. Watching calmly from a respectful distance means longer, better sightings for you and a safer ocean for them. 🐋
