Pigeon Island National Park, Sri Lanka
A marine national park in Sri Lanka that’s home to a diverse array of marine life and coral reefs. Location: Located 1 km off the coast of Nilaveli, a coastal town in Eastern Province. Size: The park covers 471.429 hectares, with only 9 hectares on land. Features: The island is home to a 200 m long and 100 m wide coral reef with over 100 species of coral. The reef is home to over 300 types of tropical reef fish. History: The island was used as a shooting range during the colonial era and during World War II. It was designated as a sanctuary in 1963 and became a national park in 2003. Popularity: A popular park in Sri Lanka that’s considered one of the best places to snorkel in the country.
